How Deceptive Can An Online Ad Be? Apparently, VERY!

Newest Rescue is 6 Year Old OTTB Magic!

This gelding was brought to our attention by some internet savvy folks who sent me the CraigsList ad for him (since removed). But, you can see the original ad with same picture & info they used for the CL ad - HERE - you will be shocked at the difference. The ad shows a gorgeous, healthy, sound horse...this is what our hauler found when he picked up him last week....

To say we were shocked is an understatemnt. Magic's page on our site is HERE.

He is emaciated, covered in rainrot, & was left outside for MONTHS in the weather as the people charged with his care watched him starve (family "friends" that were supposed to be taking care of him because his owner packed up & moved out of state). Yet, through all of that he is still super sweet and very kind. You can see him getting his first bath by clicking HERE - it's a short clip :o)

He is in need of sponsorship during his recovery, we estimate 9 months to a 1 year before he is fully recovered. Interested in sponsoring him or someone else? Click HERE!

This is Enrica, we are helping her family stay together via Mattie's Legacy Fund. Her Mom, Laura, lost her job & is in staying a shelter. Laura's friend is keeping Enrica & her two mini horse friends until Laura is back on her feet. She is just one of the many horse families we help stay together & keep safe around the nation via Mattie's Legacy Fund.

Christmas Eve at Angel Acres, not a creature was stirring not even...um, ok, wrong story line! Things are as crazy and hectic as ever at Angel Acres...hence the reason we're sending you this quick note.

Remember Grace - here story is HERE - the photo immediately below is on her rescue day...scroll down to see her 30 day - Christmas Eve - update!!!

The photo below is from today, Christmas Eve, after exactly 30 days at our Foster Mom Clare's facility (she was in quarantine at animal control for 4 weeks prior to her arrival at the rescue) where she was quickly accepted into the herd; a testament to her lovely personality and kind soul.

Um, I am not exactly sure she is digging the reindeer ears but, we think she looks ADORABLE!

Grace - 3 Weeks Later...Oh My, What A Little Love Can Do...

This is Grace at 3 weeks after being rescued from allegedly being kept in a garage (where you keep a car) for 2 +/- years, not being fed and being denied water. She is enjoying a nuzzle with our trainer, Jessie.

This is significant because we were told that she was "extremely head shy"...um...not anymore, now that she has food and someone to love her...I'd be head shy too if my owner wasn't feeding me and kept me in a garage!

This is what she looked like upon arrival ...as you can see she is looking better already! BIG thanks to Foster Mom Clare for taking such great care of her and to Clare & Jessie for getting her back into the "I am now a loved horse" groove ;o)

Billboard Campaign More Important Than Ever!

HELP URGENTLY NEEDED!

You may have heard Conference Committee Chair Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI), Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) voted to reject de-funding of inspections for horses bound for slaughter for human consumption. Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA) was the lone supporter of continued de-funding of the inspections.

On November 18, 2011 President Obama signed this federal ag bill into law.

What does that mean exactly? That means that horse slaughter plants could possibly reopen in the United States of America.

How could this have happened when millions of Americans are opposed to horse slaughter? Simple, the pro slaughter lobby is a well funded machine thriving on the blood money of the accidental industry of brutality and horror - horse slaughter.

Proganda like this United Horsemen newsletter have helped allow this atrocity to occur. (See my reply to their original email to Angel Acres and their "rescue plans" - HERE.)

In my opinion, they have been able to package horse slaughter to the non horse savvy public to appear as a public service that benefits horses and provides a service to horse owners.

Horses suffer at every step of the process - from transport to killing floor - many anti slaughter websites have undercover video of the horrors & inhumane treatment taking place at slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico.

We have been watching the hits to the billboards companion website Stop Slaughtering US increase DAILY everywhere there is a billboard up! We are up to 12,000+ hits per week. This means we ARE making an impact and raising awareness, one state at a time.

Horse slaughter is NOT harvesting, processing, rendering; it is horrifically and brutally slaughtering innocent horses who have given their lives (in more cases than not) for their owners.

The Angel Acres Anti Horse Slaughter Awareness Campaign is a grassroots effort designed to change that, one driver and one billboard at a time. This one is URGENT - PLEASE HELP by DONATING today!

We receive no federal, state or corporate funding for this awareness and now, even more important educational effort.

Angel Acres' Decorate The Tree Event Has Begun!

Good Morning and Let the Holiday Cheer Begin!!!!

Our 3rd Annual Angel Acres Decorate the Tree Event has begun!

As little as a $1 (even in today's economy) will help horses in dire need of that Holiday Cheer and a renewed life in the years to follow...How do you ask?...By reaching the masses...Well sort of like that shampoo commercial of old...by you telling one person and them telling one person, and so on...

Most importantly though, YOUR donations help horses like Grace, shown below on the day she was siezed by local authorities last month. The 1st photo shows her being removed from the location where she was apparently denied food and water, and kept locked up...literally locked in a very small building.

The photo below is AFTER One month's care in quarantine at the local animal control farm - still looking really thin, probably wormy and in need of SERIOUS TLC. She is shown arriving on Thanksgiving Day to the Angel Acres training/rehabilitation facility. (you can click her picture below to see her facebook post & leave a comment for her, too)

YOUR support makes a HUGE difference in the lives of the horses we touch each day. Please help fill our tree and the bellies of starving and neglected horses this holiday season.

There seems to be some confusion about somethings that have happened in the past and I am very unhappy that Christy Sheidy chooses to continually post inaccurate information about me in a public forum. She identified a kill buyer, Don Nickerson to the ASPCA when on a field trip to the auction – surprise the kill buyer, Don Nickerson- wasn’t there- who did she misinform the ASPCA about being a kill buyer? Don’t know. You know exactly who it was, she was at your place the day before and you had invited her to go along with you but she already had arrangements to meet with us. I identified the correct people.

She had a horse disappear from the auction that was purchased- never to be found, - I got a call from MidAtlantic Horse Rescue who was at the sale that day and was asked if I could take in a horse THEY (not us) JUST BOUGHT and I said sure and sent our hauler to get him, when our hauler arrived he was gone. I ended up paying for that horse (because I gave my word to MAHR that I would take him and did take on the responsibility) and looking all over the country for him and I NEVER EVEN SAW HIM however; we did find out he was stolen but no proof so I have to sit and stew about it.

Sold saved TB mares as broodmares- NO, another inaccuracy you keep posting, we were contacted to help save 4 older broodmares that were being shipped to slaughter THAT DAY - we got a few HOURS notice - and we posted for them to find homes - we did not sell them, we never even saw them. We did help arrange transport to new homes and screened folks the best we could in the little bit of time we had before they were shipped to slaughter, - it’s on ABR and didn’t know about the kill pen close to New Holland actually said we were lying about it– Alex Brown went to verify and we pulled My Little Bean who was then the spokes horse in DC for American’s Against Horse Slaughter. I cannot even respond to this comment because I do not know what she is talking about.

Jo then left ABR after looking like a fool and takes every opportunity to bash AC4H when it was her own ignorance that put her in that position. I quit ABR because of the scamming and lying that is allowed to go on there. I am guessing you are referring to the day you ran into Jill Curtis, her mother and I at the door and said, and I quote "anything in their today?" We told you about a chestnut mare we saw. This was at 2 - 3pm AFTER the sale was over. ABR is home to so many scammers and rip off artists we left because of that, not because of anything else. We were in the kill pen ALL DAY with Alex Brown - and a reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer - you were not there that day, if that is the day you are referring to.

What I want to know is what does she have to lend to the HSUS steering committee? What does she know? I evidently have something to offer as I was asked to be on the committee and work hard to help horses behind the scenes. Were you asked to be on the committee?

She doesn’t even attend the auction with regularity, doesn’t know locations of kill pens and can’t identify kill buyers either. No, I don't go regularly, I have the rescue horses and work to attend to here and we do not need to go to the auction - we have another rescue and a volunteer that goes as often as she can and we get direct to kill / underground horses - so, no need to go and beg for money to pull them from the pen when they are delivered to us by haulers paid for by trainers that need places for their horses to go. They know they are coming to a clean facility, we won't go online and berate them and we will get them placed into homes. So, that saves them from going to the sale in the first place.

I do know who the kill buyers are and can identify them - I have cancelled checks to prove it.

What does she do??? Well, let's see I am putting up billboards around the country raising awareness about horse slaughter, I am taking in starving horses that are being seized by AC in Maryland and Pennsylvania, I am training and reschooling horses to be adopted out into loving homes, I am accepting horses BEFORE they get to the auction (see above note), I am helping people that are in need around the nation via Mattie's Legacy Fund. I also speak with people who believe their only option is to send their horse to auction...I work from the time I get up to the time I go to bed, all day every day.

Oh I know she sits on her computer all day voting for herself in various contests. Yes that was sarcastic I don't sit on my ass all day, I can sure tell you that. That's why I love my smart phone ;o) Those various contests have enabled our rescue to save more lives without emotionally blackmailing our readers by screaming the truck is coming. Those contests didn't ask for anything more than a vote from our readers and will enable us to now have a truck that starts when I turn the key and many more horses were saved as a result of those contest grant awards without begging for money because "the truck is coming"...how about you?

This is Socks - a pony mare rescued by Jody and her family - she was starved and so weak she could not walk for water and hay. Jody had to take water and food to her.

AND she was pregnant & severely foundered at the time of rescue...the farrier believes with proper care & maintenance she will be able to remain comfortable and live a long life.

1st picture is at the time of her rescue and the one below is after being rescued and living with her rescuer, Jody. We are assisting Jody and Socks with farrier care via Mattie's Legacy Fund. We have helped many, many families in need of assistance via Mattie's Fund.

It is because of our supporters that we are able to provide help to Jody, who says this about Socks, "She is a very good pony and I just want to give her the life she deserves. I just need the help to get her through this pregnancy and give her a loving place to the rest of her life."

"How Sickening Is This?

The above screen shot is a conversation between self proclaimed horse eater Wyoming Representative Sue Wallis and a few of her readers. Are people pushing for horse slaughter to return to the USA REALLY heroe's? I don't think so...This post shows folks cheering because what happened today could clear the way for horse slaughter plants in the USA to reopen - learn more by reading this article in the Huffington Post by Mark Markarian.

In the article, Mark Markarin, Chief Program & Policy Officer, The Humane Society of the United States, states, "it could cost U.S. taxpayers about $5 million annually to subsidize government inspections of foreign-owned horse slaughter plants."

This should make ANY horse lover angry - pro slaughter groups have been able to package horse slaughter to the non horse savvy public to appear as a public service that benefits horses and provides a service to horse owners.

The pro slaughter lobby's efforts to hide the true horror of horse slaughter by using terminology like "processing", "rendering", "harvesting" have allowed this atrocity to happen. You might be thinking - HOW could this have happened? Easy, a large majority of the American public is unaware of what is happening to our horses. It's the reason we started the billboard campaign and the non graphic companion website.

You know that horses suffer at every step of the process - from transport to killing floor - many anti slaughter websites have undercover video of the horrors & inhumane treatment taking place at slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. Many Americans do NOT know this.

Horse slaughter is NOT harvesting, processing, rendering; it is horrifically and brutally slaughtering innocent horses who have given their lives (in more cases than not) for their owners. Slick advertising by the pro slaughter side has made it seem "ok" for horses to be slaughtered, it's NOT!

The Angel Acres Anti Horse Slaughter Billboard Campaign is a grassroots effort designed to change that, one driver and one billboard at a time. It is bringing more and more people to our non graphic educational website each day - we are averaging more than 10,000+ hits per week - and folks are learning that horse slaughter is NOT humane & that EVERY person can do something to stop horse slaughter from ever coming back to the USA.

Sad Weekend at Angel Acres - Sigh...

Friday night we found Snuggler not looking quite right, we administered im banamine and watched. Saw slight improvement but within a short time we knew it was beyond anything we could handle as the pain was too intense.

Fast forward to 1:15am Saturday morning...

the vet (not our regular vet as he is away) had to euthanize Snuggy due to a ruptured bladder. We have NO idea how this happened - he was FINE one minute and in pain the next.

We are devastated by the loss of Snuggler - he was a wonderful horse & had just become available (he was seriously injured last August and recovered completely - details are on our facebook page from August 2010)

We thought that it couldn't get worse, we were wrong. After an awful, sleepless night I went out

to feed the gang and found Jamaica Punch down in the runin (he is the EPSM horse). The feeling of utter dread was something I can't quite describe.

We did everything we could to get him up - we called the same er vet back & she came out and determined his legs could no longer hold him up, (he arrived at our rescue 3 months ago and was immediately put on EPSM diet) he was seen by our vet 2 weeks ago and vet saw improvement, nasty thrush he arrived with was gone and he was making (everyone thought) good progress.

Sadly, he was humanely euthanized by the vet on Saturday (yesterday) afternoon at about 2:15 pm.

Losing 2 horses in less than 24 hours is something we have never experienced and we are simply beyond sad - we've only lost 6 horses total in nearly 8 years - 2 in basically one day is just devastating for us.

Vet said their issues and subsequent deaths are not related (they weren't anywhere near each other on the farm).

We were planning on rescuing 2 more horses in their memory but have decided to wait - their vet bills and necropsy costs etc are over $1500 - this has depleted our emergency vet fund & we must work to rebuild that before we can move forward. We have just 2 days to go in our billboard campaign challenge fundraiser on Global Giving - you have pushed over our goal and we will be able to get about 10* billboards up around the nation! Woo Hoo!!

We are the ONLY horse rescue in the challenge, the ONLY animal charity in the Top 40 charities, have THE MOST facebook shares (we get a bonus for that), we are on the 1st page of "most popular projects" and you have moved us up to 4th place out of the 200 charities in the challenge!!

Help Us Go National!!

We are working hard to take the Angel Acres Anti Horse Slaughter Billboard Campaign national!

Our billboard project was accepted by the Global Giving website - a HUGE boost to our horse slaughter awareness efforts.

In order to get a permanent spot on their site we need at least 50 people to donate and help us raise funds for the billboard campaign.

So far, 12 people have donated to the effort - we need at least 38 more people to donate to our project in order to secure a permanent spot on the Global Giving site; we have a very short time to do it in.

Why are we asking for your help to make this go national and why is this particular spot so importantl? It's simple - posting on forums and chat rooms, private groups, etc is NOT enough to spread the word that American horses are being shipped across the borders into Mexico and Canada to be brutally slaughtered - EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Global Giving will give us a chance to reach MILLIONS of people each month about our efforts!

The pro slaughter groups would love for us to fail and not make it, we cannot let that happen.

People cannot fix a problem they are not aware of & many people in the United States do not know thousands of horses are shipped to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered – DAILY.

We receive no federal, state or corporate funding for this awareness and educational effort.

TO RECEIVE NEW TOYOTA VEHICLE TO BETTER SERVE THE COMMUNITY

Toyota 100 Cars for Good Program Names Winning Organization

Glenville, Pa. – August 4, 2011–Toyota is pleased to announce that Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue was recognized as a winner of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program and will receive a Toyota Tundra to better serve the community. The Toyota 100 Cars for Good program is awarding 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days to 100 deserving nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public.

Public voting began on May 9 and continues for 100 consecutive days. Each day, five organizations are profiled on Toyota’s Facebook page and voters may vote for the charity they feel is most deserving of the vehicle. A vehicle will be awarded each day through August 16 for a total of 100 vehicles. Voters may place one vote per day, each day, over the course of the program.

“The outpouring of support and interest in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program has been tremendous,” Michael Rouse, Toyota Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Affairs. “It is amazing to see how this program has brought individuals, organizations and communities together. We are equally excited to see Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue utilize their new vehicle to do good in the community.”

Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue was profiled on Toyota’s Facebook page on August 3, 2011, along with four other finalists who were in the running to receive a new vehicle. Based on support from the community and votes from the public, Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue was named the August 3, 2011 winner.

The new Toyota Tundra will be used to pick up hay, straw and grain, to pull the horse trailer, to carry supplies, etc. The truck will be used on a daily basis to help with the general daily activities at the horse rescue.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have won a new truck from Toyota! We can’t thank the folks at Toyota enough for creating this great program. This contest really galvanized our online community; folks that didn’t even know each other before the contest started working together to spread the word and rally folks to vote on our behalf,” said Jo Deibel, Founder and Director of Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue.

Ah, what a wonderful way to start a day! To be called a tree hugging pinko commy group...simply because we believe that horse slaughter is a brutal, horrific fate NO horse should face.

Click HERE to see just a sampling of what they are saying about us and our billboards. Pro slaughter side ADMITS folks do not know about horse slaughter and that we are a "problem" for them...GOOD...that's our goal! Click HERE for a sampling of some of the emails we receive & our replies.

Pro slaughter groups have been able to package horse slaughter to the non horse savvy public to appear as a public service that benefits horses and provides a service to horse owners.

We are having an impact on the pro slaughter lobby's efforts to hide the true horror of horse slaughter by using terminology like "processing", "rendering", "harvesting".

Horse slaughter is NOT harvesting, processing, rendering; it is horrifically and brutally slaughtering innocent horses who have given their lives (in more cases than not) for their owners.

The Angel Acres Anti Horse Slaughter Awareness Campaign is a grassroots effort designed to change that, one driver and one billboard at a time. PLEASE HELP us keep up the momentum by DONATING today!

Task Force in NH Working To Raise Billboard!

Angel Acres Anti Horse Slaughter Awareness Billboard Campaign

This nationwide campaign is working to raise awareness about the inhumane slaughter of America’s beloved horses through billboard raising. The campaign began in January, 2011 and as a result, billboards have been raised in 14 states.

You can help!

Please attend the New Hampshire Against Horse Slaughter “Stop Slaughtering Us” Billboard Task Force for a fundraising event on Sunday, July 24. The fundraiser will take place at Uno Chicago Grill, 238 Indian Brook Drive, Dover, NH.

20% of all sales will go towards an anti horse slaughter billboard in New Hampshire.

Note: You must present a ticket in order for Uno to make this donation.

Horse Slaughter FYI
MYTH: Only sick and old horses are sent to slaughter.
FACT: A U.S. Dept of Agriculture study revealed that more than 92% of horses going to slaughter are healthy.

MYTH: Horse slaughter is like being "put down".
FACT: Horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.
Each year over 100,000 healthy, sound, sane horses are shipped to Mexico and Canada to be brutally slaughtered.
These horses travel over 30 hours in horrific conditions, deprived of food, water and rest.
The slaughter process includes being hit repeatedly in the forehead with a captive bolt, strung up by their hind legs, and having their throats slit to bleed them out.
